Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement

One path trades flexibility for a lower premium. The other trades premium for predictability. Decide before the window is gone.

Takeaways
  • Original Medicare is Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical). It does not cap all out-of-pocket costs and does not include most outpatient drugs.
  • A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) sits on top of Original Medicare and pays many of the leftover bills. You usually add Part D for drugs. Doctors who take Medicare are generally available.
  • Medicare Advantage (Part C) is a private plan that replaces A and B (usually with D included). Networks, prior authorization, and copays matter. Premiums can be low. Travel and specialist access can be the trade.

How to choose

List your doctors and your drugs. If you need a specific specialist who is not in an Advantage network, a Supplement plus Part D is often the calmer life. If you want a lower monthly premium, are comfortable with a network, and like extra dental or vision extras, Advantage may fit. There is no universal winner.

Windows and underwriting

When you first enroll in Medicare, Medigap is typically guaranteed issue. Later, in many states, you may have to answer health questions to switch from Advantage to a Supplement. That is why the first decision is hard to unwind. Do not guess.
